Matariki Living Taonga Awards 2018

March 19, 2018

Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga is calling on the community to nominate "living treasures" for recognition at the Matariki Living Taonga Awards 2018.

The awards, held once every three years, are designed to recognise quiet achievers and role models across the communities of Heretaunga (Hastings District).

TToH Board Chair Mike Paku says Matariki and living treasures are a natural fit.

"Matariki is the Māori New Year; it's when Māori traditionally reflect on the year gone by and prepare for the new year ahead.

"These awards are all about acknowledgement of the "stars" of our communities; the ones who are doing amazing things, and usually for the benefit of others. We need to appreciate and thank them.

"Matariki is a very appropriate time for us to stop and take stock of all that, and acknowledge what we have. It's a great reason for all of us across Heretaunga to come together and celebrate.

This year, the Matariki Living Taonga Awards have been expanded to 11 categories including academic success and youth leadership, kaumātua committed to healthy, active lives, and cultural, family, environmental and business achievements. Nomination forms are available on the TToH website or from its campus at 821 Orchard Rd, Hastings.

The awards ceremony and dinner will be held at the Hawke's Bay Tomoana Showgrounds on 22 June. Tickets will go on sale on 21 May.
