Te Whare Karamu

Te Whare Karamu is a ‘supportive house’that provides short term (three to six months) furnished accommodation with 24 hour live in supervision for Teen Parents and their children. The main purpose of the service is to assist vulnerable young parents to gain and consolidate skills, self esteem and confidence as a young parent and as a person in a safe and nurturing whānau environment.

This service is available to any Teen Parent(s) under the age of 20 years who are pregnant or who have young children within the Hastings and Napier district and who are working towards a transition to independence within a 6 month period.

This service can offer;

Supported living  that encourages self-responsibility within a whanau atmosphere

Intensive therapeutic programme that is customised to the needs of the Teen Parents and their whanau

Connection to the wider community to ensure engagement in supportive services

A key worker to support the Teen Parent to reach their aspirations and ensure success

Expected outcomes may vary from one Teen Parent to another but could include; strengthening of personal relationships and connection to the wider community; pride as a young parent, a lifestyle free from drugs, alcohol and violence, engagement in supportive services, improved education, better employment outcomes, practical skills like cooking, budgeting and managing a household.
In addition to these outcomes, Teen Parents will be able to live confidently as an independent family.
